Easy mode Grade 3Problem
Imagine a grid of squares. Each square is either filled in (dark) or empty (blank).
For any square, look at the squares that touch it — including the ones touching only at a corner. So a square in the middle of the grid has neighbors.
Now we change every square at the same time, using these rules:
- A filled square stays filled if it has exactly or filled neighbors.
- An empty square becomes filled if it has exactly filled neighbors.
- Every other square ends up empty.
Here is the special starting setup. The outer ring of the grid is all empty. Inside that ring is a block of squares in the middle, and each square in that block could be filled or empty — we get to choose.
We want to choose the filled and empty squares in the middle block so that, after applying the rules once, the only filled square in the whole grid is the very center square.
How many different starting setups of the middle block give this result? (Rotated or flipped versions count as different setups.)

Alternative: Tool #10 (Physical Representation): grab a $3 \times 3$ grid of coins. Place $3$ heads in any pattern and check the rules by hand. With only $\binom{9}{3} + \binom{9}{2} \cdot \dots$ initial configurations involving the center (a few dozen), brute force is feasible if you're systematic. The toolkit/casework approach is cleaner but the physical check is the trustworthy backup.
